Crystal Methamphetamine (ice) Training

The Alcohol, Tobacco &  other Drugs Council and Shelter Tas offered training in Crystal Methamphetamine (‘ice’) use and strategies to deal with ice affected clients.

Registrations were offered to housing/homelessness, AOD and other health/welfare workers in Tasmania. Training was held in Hobart on 9th July 2015 and Devonport on 7th July 2015.

Training was delivered in one morning session and two concurrent breakout sessions in the afternoon.

The morning session – Introduction to Ice, 9am-12:30pm – suitable for everyone

This workshop was an introductory session focusing on understanding methamphetamine users. Changes in patterns of use and user type, effect of methamphetamines on the brain, attitudes, harms and harm reduction.

Afternoon sessions – Responses breakout sessions, 1:30-5pm – limited numbers

Breakout 1 was suitable for new AOD workers, housing and homelessness workers, generalist health/welfare workers, mental health workers.

This workshop was an interactive skills based session and covered: managing complex behaviours related to methamphetamine use, strategies to assist users with emotion regulation, responding to intoxication and brief interventions. Breakout 2 was for specialist AOD workers.
