COMMUNITY HOUSING INFORMATION

Information supplied by Housing Tasmania cites the community housing sector in Tasmania provides an important alternative to private and public rental housing. It contributes to the overall supply of affordable social housing in the state and provides tenants with increased choice, including opportunities to be involved in the management of their own housing.

To provide a sense of the Tasmanian sector at present, there are approximately fifty (50) community based housing providers operating state-wide managing just under five hundred (500) properties. Organisation’s range in size from a Housing Association managing over one hundred (100) homes to small community based housing providers managing only a handful of properties. There are seven (7) Co-operatives within the sector, managing over one hundred (100) properties.

Tas Affordable Housing Limited (TAHL)
Established in December 2006 to undertake the important role of increasing the supply of affordable housing in Tasmania.

Supported Residential Facilities
Anglicare provide communal, long term accommodation in 3 supported residential facilities across the state. Each facility can provide accommodation for 30 residents. Eligibility is the same as for public housing, targeting people on low incomes. Facilities cater for singles and couples over 18 years of age who wish to live in a communal setting. Rent/board is calculated at 80% of people's income (excluding CA), this covers 3 meals a day, electricity, weekly linen service for sheets and towels and some recreational activities. The facilities are staffed by a Lodge Manager who lives on site. Contact Details:
